Snake wrapping around an ankle and foot
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey snake is coiled around the ankle and runs down across the top of the foot, with its tail ending near the upper side of the foot. The body is outlined and shaded with dark tones that give it some dimension against the pale skin. The photograph is taken against a dark background, so the tattoo and the foot stand out clearly.

The hall smells of floor polish and sausage rolls, and Dean Pryce is already telling the story about Gordon again, the corn snake from Mr Haskett's lab that vanished in the Lent term of 1998. People laugh in the right places. You don't. You remember the tank latch that always stuck, and that you were the last one in the lab before the bell.

Nobody ever found Gordon. The caretaker blamed the cleaners, the cleaners blamed the Year Tens, and Haskett retired with a grievance and a spider plant he talked to during lunch. You moved to Margate, then Leeds, and somehow the snake became the one thing from school people still asked about, as if it were the most interesting thing you had ever done. Across the room, Priya Mahal is holding a glass of white wine and watching you the way she did the day she caught you with the spare key.
"Haskett's widow found a shoebox in the loft," she says, low enough that Dean can't hear. "Inside was a letter addressed to us. Just one line. Gordon went somewhere warm."
You wait for the rest, but that's all there is. Outside, the car park is slick with the first frost, and a line of pale tracks runs from the bins to the hedge. You stand in the cold with your keys in your fist and think about how a thing can stay hidden for years, curled up and patient, waiting for someone to notice the warmth under the bonnet.
