Coilover shock through torn skin on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A vertical view of a lower leg showing a realistic tattoo of a coilover shock absorber, with gold springs, a dark metal body and a yellow canister with a small logo. The skin appears split open around the shock, with shaded red and brown edges that give a sense of depth. The colours are bold against the pale skin, and the leg is shown against a white garage door.

Nadia had been listening to the front left spring tick for three miles before she admitted it was not the road. The car's ride had gone hard, then soft, in the space of a single lorry overtake, and by the time the barrier at the freight lane lifted she could feel every stone through the wheel arch. She pulled into the bay behind the customs shed, where floodlights buzzed over an empty patch of tarmac, and sat with the engine ticking as it cooled.

Her uncle Istvan had taught her that a shock absorber was an argument between a spring and a bottle of oil, and that the spring always won if you let it. He kept a damaged coilover in a biscuit tin on the workshop shelf, its gold coil dented where a pebble had struck it on a wet motorway in 1989. When he wanted her attention he tapped the tin with a spanner. She had not thought of that tin in years, and now she could think of nothing else: the stiff gold coils, the yellow canister, his voice saying that a thing built to bend will always tell you first, if you listen with the right part of yourself.
She jacked the car up under the floodlights, and the wheel came away in her hands. The spring had split at the third coil like a wishbone, and the damper beneath was weeping oil onto her boots. The spare she kept in the boot, wrapped in a feed sack, took an hour to fit with a borrowed torque wrench. A lorry driver brought her a flask of tea and would not take the money for it.
By half four the sky over the barrier had gone the colour of weak milk. She drove through with the new spring settling quietly beneath her, and the officer in the booth glanced at the battered tin on the passenger seat and asked nothing at all. At the next junction she put the tin in the glovebox and drove on, the old coil still warm inside it.
