Roses and skull on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical design shows a large rose at the top, a detailed human skull in the middle and a smaller rose at the bottom, with water droplets resting on the petals. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong contrast between light highlights and dark shadows. The design fills the frame against a plain black background.

Mabel Quirke had been told the old rose would never take in the north-facing bed, but she dug it in anyway the week after the frost, when the ground was soft from the thaw and the head gardener had gone to Fakenham about his pension papers. Her hands were grey to the wrist with clay. Beneath the root ball the spade turned up something pale and rounded, and she knelt to clear it with her fingers.

It was a skull, small and browned, its jaw long gone. Nobody at Holm Lodge had mentioned a burial in the garden, and the parish register kept in the scullery said nothing of one. She carried it up to the potting shed wrapped in a seed sack and set it on the windowsill, where the lamp caught the cracked crown. By morning the roses on the south wall had opened in the night, and every petal held a bead of dew, as if the garden had been weeping on purpose.
After that she tended the bed differently, watering only at first light, pinching back the suckers and talking to the plants the way her mother had talked to the hens. When the head gardener came back he saw the skull on the sill and called it a mercy that nobody had put a spade through a Scotch rose and a buried crow. Mabel said nothing. She had stopped watering altogether by then, and the dew still came.
In March she found a second rose opening low on the wall, almost at the level of the path, and beneath its roots a second bone, smaller than the first. She pressed her palm to the wet brick and felt it cool under her hand. Then she left both where they lay.
