Torn skin revealing a coilover shock on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A photorealistic coilover suspension unit appears to burst through torn skin on the lower leg, with the reservoir at the top and a coil spring running down the calf. The metal body is rendered in silver and grey with fine highlights, while the spring and reservoir are bright orange and yellow. The skin edges are shaded to look split and raised, and the tattoo fills the frame against a plain wooden floor and white wall.

The blue hatchback came into the yard on a flatbed at half past six, its near-side wheel canted out like a dropped hand. Dai Pryce had brought it down off the Clee Hill stage with a snapped top mount and a wishbone bent into the shape of a question mark. He stood by the roller door with his helmet under one arm and asked whether it could be ready for Saturday. I told him what I always tell drivers: nothing is ready until it has been argued with.

The damper was the worst of it. The reservoir had split along its weld and the oil had gone everywhere, down the strut, across the bench and into the cracks in the concrete where my mother's old cat used to sleep. I stripped the unit under the work lamp, laying each part on a square of card in the order it came out, the way my father taught me. Piston, shim stack, seals. The spring was the only piece that had come through unhurt, a coil of orange-painted steel with its stamped code still legible in the light. I sat with it in my lap for longer than I needed to.
Dai came back at nine with two teas from the kiosk and found me still at it. He asked whether the spring would make the stage. I said the spring would make anything. He laughed, then stopped laughing, and asked the question he had really come to ask, which was whether he should keep driving after the last two crashes. I didn't answer. I fitted the new reservoir, torqued the top mount, and let the car down off the stands so he could hear it settle on its springs.
On Saturday the car went up the hill with a new damper and the old spring, which I had cleaned until it looked as though it had never seen a gravel stage. I waited at the bottom with the flask. When the blue car came back down into the lane the front end sat level, and the spring ticked as it cooled on the verge, a small steady sound I could hear over the engine.
