Colourful feather tattoo on the lower stomach

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a torso shows a feather in purple, pink, teal and orange, decorated with paisley swirls and a sprig of leaves and curls extending to the left. The linework is clean and the shading is soft, with watercolour-like gradients inside the feather. The tattoo sits low on the abdomen above the waistband of the jeans, with a navel piercing visible higher up.

Dear Ruth,

You will think I have gone soft, but I have kept the peacock-blue feather you left on the bar at the Palais, the one with the paisley eye worked into its vane. Mr Okafor says it is only a moult from a pheasant that came in with the Norfolk order, but I know better. I have been running a fingertip along its barbs every night since you left for Leeds, the way you used to smooth the ribbon on your wrist before the band started.

The hall has changed. They have put in a new sprung floor, and the orange lamps over the stage now throw the colours of boiled sweets across the dancers. Last Saturday a girl in a green frock asked whether the fringe on her shawl would hold up under the spin, and I told her to stitch it with silk, not cotton, and to keep her left hand high. She laughed and said she would sooner trust a feather than a seamstress. I wanted to tell her about you, how you could mend a wing in twenty minutes and still be first on the floor for the last waltz.

Enclosed is the sprig of ivy I pressed from the back wall, and a tin of the gold dust Mr Okafor sent up from Birmingham. Use it on the vane edge where the teal runs into the rose. You always did say the light should find the colour before the eye does.

I shall be at the hall on Saturday, same as ever, with the cloakroom key on its string. If the wind is kind, bring the feather back and I will show you the new swirl I have painted at the base, the one that curls toward the door as if it means to follow you out.

Yours always, Vi
