Dreamcatcher with blue feathers on the side

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a large outer hoop, three smaller hoops and a woven web is drawn in black linework. Several feathers hang from the lower hoops, shaded in blues and turquoise with soft gradients and highlights. The tattoo runs vertically along the side of the torso, with the photo framed against a pale blue background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ewan Cairns had stopped sleeping by the third week out of Lerwick. The cook, a broad man named Tomas Ferrand, blamed the damp bunks, but the mate knew better. Bad dreams had come aboard in the fog off the Faroes, and they crowded the forecastle like gulls round a gutted fish.

Ewan's grandmother had made him a dreamcatcher before he sailed. It was willow and sinew, with one large hoop and three smaller ones hung beneath it like moons, and a web strung so tight it hummed when flicked with a fingernail. She told him the web caught what frightened a person and let the good dreams slip through the small holes, and that the feathers were there for the wind to read. He had laughed at her then. He did not laugh now, lying awake with the thing swinging above his head.

On the forty-first night the sea lay flat and silver under a moon the colour of skimmed milk. Ewan climbed to the rail and found that the feathers had come loose from the lower hoops. They were drifting away across the water, blue as the deep off the shelf, and he watched them until the last one was only a speck on the swell. Then he went below and slept like a stone for the first time since Lerwick.

In the morning the cook found the web still hanging over the bunk, torn clean through the middle. Nobody on the crew would say whose bad dreams had gone out through the gap, and Ewan only shrugged and said his grandmother would have plenty to say about feathers that did not come home.
