Realistic blue feather tattoo on the hip

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A single feather is shown diagonally across the lower flank, with its barbs and central shaft rendered in fine detail. The shading moves from teal and pale blue to lilac and soft purple, with darker edges giving the feather depth. The tattoo sits against smooth, warm skin, with a navel piercing with a jewelled ornament and black underwear visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jay came down to the mill race every morning that October, and every morning Tomas threw it a crust, because his mother said a bird you feed will not tell the miller where you have been. The jay took the crust and left a feather on the wet stone, blue as ice on the millpond, with a streak of violet where the light caught it.

Tomas kept the feathers in a tin that had once held tea. By Advent there were eleven of them, and the miller's wife had started asking questions he could not answer. He only knew that when he held one to the window the colour slid from green to grey to a purple like a bruise healing, and that the wood beyond the village seemed to lean closer whenever he looked at it.

On the last day of the month the jay did not come. Tomas walked to the edge of the forest with the tin under his arm and found the bird on the lowest branch of the oldest beech, one wing hanging wrong. He climbed, and it let him take it in his hands. When he opened the tin to make it a bed, it stepped inside and settled among the feathers as though they had always been its own.

The village still says the jay flew off that night with all eleven feathers caught in its breast, and that the miller found a twelfth on his doorstep, the same blue, and kept it under his hat for the rest of his days. Tomas never went back to the mill. The old beech still has a tin nailed to its trunk, and the feathers inside are always fresh.
