Colourful flower tattoo on a shoulder blade
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A stemmed flower with red and pink petals, a burst of multicoloured rays at the top, and green and yellow leaves, set against pale skin on the upper back. The shading is soft and blended, with fading edges and a stippled, painterly texture. The colour is vivid throughout, and the right-hand panel is a close-up of the rainbow rays showing the same texture.

The last of the cadmium red came out of its tin on a wet Tuesday, scraped up with a palette knife, and Nell Carrow swore at it the way she swore at anything that refused to behave. The Dreamland gondolas had to be ready for the Easter crowds, and the supplier in Leeds had shut without a word. So she mixed what she had: madder, a squeeze of lemon yellow, and a thumb of ultramarine that her father had kept in a jam jar since the seventies.

Her apprentice, a lanky boy called Dev who wore his hood up even indoors, held the board steady while she worked up a flower on the side of the Big Wheel's third car. She laid the petals in soft, overlapping clouds and then broke them up with a stippling brush, dab after dab, until the paint looked more like dew on a windowpane than a solid thing. At the top she fanned out rays in every colour the jar could give her, letting them run past the edge of the panel and into the air.
"Why's it fading at the bottom?" Dev asked, squinting. "Looks like it's going out."
"It isn't going out. Nothing sharp lasts on a seafront," she said. "Salt gets in, the wind gets at it. Better to let the edges go soft so nobody can tell where the colour stops and the sea begins."
That evening the rain stopped, and she climbed the ladder to check the gondola against the pier lights. One petal had drifted loose from the stem, a little tongue of red and gold lifting off towards the railings, and she decided to leave it that way. Some things, she thought, were better finished by the weather.
