Pink lilies on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Three pink lilies with visible stamens and green leaves sit in a cluster on the outer upper arm, with soft grey shading behind them. The petals are rendered with pale highlights and darker pink shadows, giving them depth. The arrangement runs diagonally down the arm, with the largest bloom at the top and a smaller one at the bottom.

Ruth had been pinching the dead heads off the lilies for a week before the lift broke again, so she took the stairs down to the ninth floor with the bin bag in her teeth. The lilies had come from the market in Peckham in a cardboard tray, three stems in a plastic pot, and she had kept them on the balcony rail of Pennant House because the windowsill was too narrow for anything with ambitions. Nine floors of grey render rose behind them, streaked where the rain ran.

Halfway down the stairwell she met Tomasz Wren, aged seven, coming up with a dented football under one arm. He stopped on the landing and looked at her hands. "Are they dying?" he asked. "They're going over," she said. "That's what they do when they've done their job." He considered this with the seriousness of a boy who had been told many things were for his own good. "Can I have the pollen?" "It stains," she said. "It won't come out of your school jumper." He nodded as if she had quoted him a fair price.
She gave him the pot anyway. It was lighter than she expected, the compost gone dry and crumbly, and he carried it in both arms down to the second floor like a cake that might tip. Ruth stood at the rail afterwards with empty hands, the air heavy and faintly sweet, and found orange dust on her fingertips that rubbed off slowly as she watched the car park.
That night she left the balcony door open so the smell could find its way through the flat, and in the morning there was a single pink petal stuck to the outside of the glass, pressed flat, as if someone on the stairs had wanted her to know where the flowers had gone.
