Octopus full sleeves on two arms

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Two arms are shown side by side, each covered by a full sleeve of an octopus with large suckered tentacles wrapping around the upper arm and down towards the elbow and forearm. The linework is bold with soft shading that gives the bodies and tentacles volume. Teal, green, lilac and grey ink dominate, and the composition frames both sleeves together against bare skin.

At the surface my brother Nikos was already hauling the line. 'Four baskets,' he said. 'Where are the rest?' I told him the rock had kept them. He laughed, then looked properly at my face and stopped laughing.

That night I sat on the jetty with the lamp unlit and watched the water flatten to glass. Somewhere beneath it a grey-lilac shape was resettling its arms around the hole I had left, patient as any tide. In the morning I went out with the empty basket and left my knife on the stones, and the sea, which had never needed my permission, went on keeping what was its.
