Mandala tattoo on the shoulder

Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large mandala-style design of layered petals, a central star-shaped flower and leaf motifs, with scrolling outlines and small dotted accents around the edge. The shading is built from fine stippled dots and soft grey washes, with bold black linework framing the design. The composition is centred on the shoulder blade and radiates outward across the upper back and arm.

The starter has already doubled by the time you unlock the back door, swelling against the rim of its crock as if it heard your key in the lock. Flour hangs in the cold air of the prep room. Dilys is already at the bench in her cardigan, sleeves pushed past her elbows, and she does not look up when you say good morning. She just nods at the tray of butter and slides a sheet of dough towards you.

Laminating is a matter of patience and nerve. You roll the dough into a long rectangle, lay the butter across the middle like a folded letter, and bring the edges over until it becomes a neat parcel. Then you turn it, roll, fold, and do it again, three times, until the layers are thin enough to see light through when you hold them to the window. Dilys says the layers are petals if you squint, and she has a way of making you squint at everything until it turns into something else.

By six the oven is roaring and the first loaves are cooling in rows along the rack. Dilys has a celebration cake on the far bench, four tiers for a golden wedding, and she wants a crown of sugar work on top. She hands you the piping bag and watches your hand. Start at the centre, she says, a star with five points, then fill the spaces with petals, then dots, dots everywhere, the small ones are where people look twice. You pipe until your lines shake less than they did.

When she sets the last dot in place the window has gone from black to the colour of weak tea. Dilys wipes her hands, looks at the cake for a long moment, and says nothing, which from her is praise. Outside, the first van pulls up with its headlights still on. You carry the trays out into the cold, the bread still warm through the cloth, and the sky is only just starting to remember it is morning.
