Colourful Saturn with swirls and stars
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a striped, rainbow-shaded planet with a tilted brown and grey ring, set against a blue and pink cloudy background. White spiral swirls curl around the planet, and small white stars and dots are scattered across the design. The bold outlines and vivid, blended colour give it a painterly finish, and the composition is centred and fills most of the frame.

Ada Lowther kept the sweetshop on Mill Lane in Ashby Parva, and every winter of the nineteen-fifties she went up to the roof with a flask of cocoa and her nephew Billy to look at Saturn. Billy was seven the year the almanac said it would sit highest over the church. He wanted to know why it wore a ring, and she told him it was a belt of ice and old dust, kept there by the planet the way a mother keeps a shawl about a child.

That spring she painted it on the back of a tin tray that had once carried Bourbon biscuits. She mixed the blues from bluebells and the pinks from the cochineal she used for coconut ice, and she let the stripes run into one another the way the sky does before rain. Billy pricked a dozen stars into the tin with a hatpin and swore the spirals were the wind, though Ada said they were the wind's handwriting and too tidy to be read by anyone in the village.
The vicar came in one Saturday to buy humbugs and stopped at the tray. He said it was a fine piece of work, but planets did not keep to shop counters, and he would be obliged if she did not let the children believe otherwise. Ada wrapped his humbugs in blue paper and said nothing.
Billy grew up and went to sea. The tray still hangs in the shop window, and on bright mornings the sun comes through the tin and throws a stripe of colour across the bread, and the customers stop, and nobody can quite say what they have seen.
