Fine line · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A crescent moon is formed from small dots, outlined stars and fine dotted trails, with several butterflies placed along its curve. The butterflies use fine black linework with pink, blue, yellow, orange and red fills. The design sits on lightly freckled skin and is set against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Margaret had not expected the gymnasium to smell of the same floor polish. Trestle tables stood where the climbing frame used to be, and someone had strung paper lanterns from the basketball hoops, dimmed now against the early dark coming through the high windows. She found the name badge with her own name spelt wrong and stuck it on anyway.

Near the urn she saw Dev Pillai, who had once been sent out of Mrs Hollis's classroom for flicking chalk dust at the ceiling tiles, and who now wore a suit the colour of wet slate. He grinned and said she still held her cup like a shield. They talked about the summer the moon came down over the playing fields, when the whole year had lain on the grass with jam jars, and Margaret had painted butterflies on the back of her hand with a felt tip so she could show them off during assembly.

Then Dev pulled a folded sheet from his jacket. It was the class photo from Year Six, and in the margin, in faded purple biro, someone had drawn a crescent of dots, with outlined stars scattered inside it and six butterflies flying along the curve. Dev said Alisha Morrow had drawn it the week she left for Leeds, and that nobody had ever asked her to explain it.

Margaret traced the dotted trail with her thumb. She knew the answer, or thought she did. Alisha had always said the moon was only the bit of the sky you could see, and the rest was still there, full of stars that didn't need looking at. She folded the sheet back along its crease, put it in her bag, and went to find the lantern switch before the caretaker did.
