Someone has set out a trestle table of cupcakes under cling film, and you recognise the pink frosting before you recognise anyone's face. Mrs Partridge's recipe, sprinkles pressed in by hand, a glossy cherry on each one like a full stop.

You don't remember the bet, only the red and blue stars Miss Hale stuck beside the register for good behaviour, and the round boiled sweet you once swapped for a rubber.

Talk drifts to who became what. One of you is a dental nurse, one is in Leeds, one is still in the house on Brackley Road with the blue front door. You find yourself counting the cherries left on the table, the way you counted stars on the wall chart, hoping the number comes out in your favour.

When the urn clicks off, you take the last cupcake, the one with its cherry slightly squashed. You peel the case back in one piece, the way you always did, and hand the cherry across the table. Dev laughs and eats it, and for a moment you are both nine again and the bet is still open.
