Colourful skull tattoos across legs, arm and torso
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A person lies on an outdoor lounger with several colourful tattoos visible on the legs, a full arm sleeve and the torso. The largest piece is a skull with floral elements across the stomach, and a clock and skull design appears lower on the body. The ink uses saturated blues, reds, pinks and greens, with bold outlines and shaded areas, and the framing is a close angled shot with a drink on a table beside the lounger.

Mind the lamp, you great lump, and sit where I can see your face. Right. The Halcyon Mary was nineteen days out of Bristol when the chronometer started losing time, and nobody aboard could say why, because Ezra Pollard had oiled it every Sunday since the Azores.

Pollard was a quiet man who painted for his supper. He'd taken a tin of cadmium red and a brush no thicker than a cat's whisker, and on the brass case of that clock he put a skull, grinning, with marigolds spilling from its eye sockets as though they'd been poured. Then he ringed it with little blue waves. Captain Ruthven called it heathen foolery. Pollard only said the sea liked a face it could recognise.
By the thirtieth day the clock had lost a full hour and a half, and the men began to quarrel over whose watch was honest. The cook swore we'd sailed backwards into the previous Tuesday. On the thirty-first night Pollard climbed to the binnacle with a candle, opened the case, and found the hands stopped at a quarter to four, the exact minute, he said, his daughter had been born in Plymouth.
He never said what he did next. But the clock ran true to Kingston, and every man who sailed on her after swore the marigolds on that skull were a little brighter than the day they were painted, and that the skull, if you looked at it long enough by lamplight, had started to smile.
