Compass and anchor watercolour tattoo on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A compass and a small anchor are tattooed on the forearm, with a round compass face in the foreground and a second, smaller pocket compass with an anchor behind it. Soft black linework outlines the objects and triangular geometric lines cross the design, while the fills use loose, bleeding washes of purple, blue, pink, green and orange. Splashes of colour and fine dots surround the subject against a plain skin background.

The needle would not settle. Mair crouched on the scree of Scarth Gap with the brass case open on her knee, watching the red tip shiver and drift towards the iron-dark shoulder of the ridge instead of north. Behind her the mule stamped, and Owen swore at the weather in two languages.

The lid carried a small anchor scratched into the metal, the work of a chandler's boy in Whitby who had sold it to her grandfather for three shillings. Her grandfather used to say a compass was only honest if you knew what it was pointing away from. She had never understood him. Now she tapped the glass, the needle swung again, and she thought of the survey line she had been paid to draw across this pass.
They walked the ridge until the cloud split. Below, a lake lay like a dropped coin, and on the far bank a stone cairn stood where no map showed one. Owen wanted to turn back. Mair took out her pencil, drew a single straight line from the lake to the cairn, and marked it with a small triangle, the way her grandfather had marked everything he meant to return to.
At the cairn a tin box was wedged under the stones, wrapped in oilcloth, with one folded chart inside. Its bearing matched the needle exactly. Mair laughed, though nobody was there to hear, and slipped the chart into her coat. The compass, she decided, had never been broken. It had only been waiting for someone to ask it the right question.
