Compass rose with feathers on the upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A compass rose with bold black linework and cardinal letters (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW) sits at the centre, with two feathers and small dot accents around it. Soft teal, pink and purple washes spread behind the compass like splashes of ink, with the black lines remaining crisp over them. The design is centred on the upper back, with the compass as the main focal point and the feathers balancing it at the right and lower left.

Shut the door properly, Tom, or the snow will come in and sit at the table with us. Now hush, because I'll tell this once. Three winters back, when the drifts had buried the moor road to the sill, a carrier called Ezra Lowe came stamping through that door with a brass compass in one fist and a wet grey feather in the other. He swore he'd found the feather caught on the signpost at Hollin Gate, and that it hadn't been there the morning before.

The compass was old, its rim gone green, the letters worn to ghosts. N stood tall at the top, and NE and SW were scratched so deep you could feel them with a thumb. Ezra set it on the table, and the needle swung lazy as a cat, then slid round and settled, trembling, on the north-east point. "It wants the sea," he said. "Every time I shake it, it wants the sea." Outside, the sky had gone to bruised plum and teal over the snow, and the window painted the brass in the same colours, pink bleeding into the black of the lines.

Nobody laughed. Old Mrs Pryce, who had buried two husbands and never once been wrong about weather, took the feather from his hat, turned it in the firelight and said the bird it came from had flown the wrong way for too many years and was ready to be let go. So Ezra wrapped himself in two blankets and went out into the white with the compass flat on his palm. We watched his lantern bob along the ridge until the snow swallowed it.

He came back at dawn, scarved to the eyes, and laid the compass down. The needle no longer moved. Beside it lay a second feather, dark and damp, and a single line of footprints led from the door to the drift where the lantern had last been seen. Ezra never told us what he'd found on that ridge. He only set the compass on the sill, where the first light could reach it, and left it pointing at the open door.
