Watch face dissolving into watercolour on a wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A wristwatch with a dark strap and a detailed face is tattooed on the inner forearm, with clock numerals and small cross-shaped stars trailing off to the left. The numerals and marks dissolve into loose, splattered washes of pink, blue, purple and orange. The shading is soft and painterly, and the watch sits at the right of the frame with the splashes spreading across the arm.

In the river town of Varrow the great tower clock ran fast every morning, and nobody could say why. The baker blamed the bells. The widow at the weir blamed the moon. Tobiah, who had inherited the clockmaker's bench and none of his patience, climbed the tower stairs one grey day with a rag, a pot of ochre and a sour temper.

In the bell chamber he found the numerals had come off the dial and were drifting in the air like dried petals. Each one left a streak behind it, pink, then blue, then a bruised purple, as though someone had flicked a brush through the room. The stars were there too, small crosses pinned to the rafters, and they hummed when he touched them. Ruth the dyer had once told him that the hours were only colour that had agreed to stay still for a while.
He stood on the ledge and began to scrape the dial clean. The paint ran down his wrist, cold as river water, and where it touched the brass the hands shivered and slid back one notch, then stopped. The clock struck eleven, though it was past noon, and every bell in the valley answered it.
He left the colours where they had settled. Each evening since, the sun goes down over Varrow in a smear of pink and blue, and the widow says the hours are spilling again. The clock keeps true now, more or less. Downriver, the fishermen say the eels come in late when the sky has been painted that way.
