Compass and feather tattoo
Neo-trad · Mixed · Photo
A detailed compass with a beaded outer ring and a feather hanging from a loop at the top, surrounded by outlined leaves. The compass face and needle are shaded in greys with fine hatching, while red shading sits behind the leaves and around the compass edge. The design is centred on a plain area of skin with the background kept clear.

Ruth had the compass open on the tailboard of the Land Rover before the snow had properly stopped, its brass lid flipped back and the needle trembling as if it had something to say. Her father's compass. He had carried it across the top field every February for thirty years to check the drift fences, and she had never once seen him look at it for longer than a glance.

The wind had swung north overnight. Beyond the gate the hedgerows were grey ghosts, and the flock had bunched into the lee of the barn wall, dirty fleeces pressed close together. Ruth turned the case until the needle settled, then frowned. It was not pointing north. It was pointing past the ridge, towards the old lambing hut that had been locked since her grandmother's time. A grey goose feather had caught in the chain's loop, barred like a bird's tail, and she worked it free with numb fingers and tucked it behind her ear the way her mother used to hold pencils.
She went up the field with the compass held flat in her palm, following the needle through drifts that came to her knees. The hut door had frozen shut. She put her shoulder to it and it gave all at once, spilling snow across a floor she had not seen since she was small. On the sill sat a tin of Oxo, a candle stub, and a folded map of the farm, every fence line inked in his square capitals.
Beside the map lay a second compass, identical to the first except for a scratch across its lid. Ruth picked it up. The needle swung round and locked, pointing back down the hill towards the house, towards her.
