Compass tattoo on the forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic tattoo of an old-fashioned pocket compass with a ring loop at the top, showing a detailed bezel, dial markings and a compass rose with compass points. The needle and rose use fine shading and highlights to create a three-dimensional effect. The design is shown in black and grey on a forearm against a dark background.

Mrs Ada Pell had brought the compass in wrapped in a handkerchief, and Tomasz could see from the counter that she had not slept. "It only points true near the docks," she said, as if that settled something. He turned it over. The ring loop at the top was worn smooth by a thumb, and the glass had a hairline crack that ran past the letter W.

Outside on Quay Street the lamps buzzed, and a late tram rattled past the shutters. Tomasz had worked the counter for eleven years and knew most things people brought in were lies told in metal: watches stopped at the hour of a quarrel, rings sold twice. He thumbed the lid open. The needle trembled, settled, and swung toward the north-east, where the painted rose showed its small black star of points, the letters faint as breath on brass.
"Where did he go, your husband?" Tomasz asked. Ada gave a short laugh. "Home, he always said. Then he'd take the long way round by the harbour." She took the compass back and held it flat on her palm the way a sailor reads a chart. The needle drifted, found nothing it liked, and then pointed squarely at the door.
Tomasz locked the till, pulled the chain on the lamp, and walked her out into the wet street. Behind them the needle kept its patient aim, past the chandler's, past the church, straight down to the river, where a boat with its lamp unlit knocked against the steps. Ada stopped. "Well," she said. "There's the long way."
