Ornate key with clock face and feather on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black and grey tattoo of an ornate skeleton key whose bow is a clock face with numerals and hands. A feather and a dangling bead chain sit beside and below the key. Fine linework and soft grey shading give the metal and scrollwork depth, and the design runs diagonally across the side of the torso.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and keep that fire fed, because this is the tale of Widow Ansell's key and the clock that would not tell the hour. Her husband, Tom Harrow, cut the bow of it from a blackthorn root the winter the lane flooded. He sat up nights at his bench in the cottage on the edge of Hollin Wood, filing the wards so true they would turn for nobody but her, and he set a little clock face into the bow so she would always know how late she was out. She never once told him she liked being late.

Then the wood took him, the way it takes a man who goes in after a strayed heifer and forgets to leave a trail of crumbs. The parish held a sitting for him, and the vicar said the proper words, and still Martha walked down to the gate each dusk with the key swinging on its bead chain. She turned it in the lock, and every night the hands crept back a minute, as if someone on the far side of the trees was winding them the wrong way.
In the ninth year a jay's feather lay on her doorstep, barred blue and clean as a new pen. She took it for a sign of nothing and went in to put the kettle on. When she came back out at dusk, the hands had stopped at five minutes to twelve, and scratched on the inside of the bow, in her husband's neat hand, was a single word: wait.
So she waited. Her boy grew tall and went off to the railway, the gate went grey, and nobody has ever turned that key since. The hands are still at five to twelve. Mind your own clocks tonight, and do not go down the lane to look for the time.
