Compass and feathers on the upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose sits at the top of the design, with a looping line and small beads trailing down beside two shaded feathers. The feathers are rendered with fine, soft shading and detailed quills. The piece is entirely black and grey, with strong contrast in the compass and softer grey tones across the feathers.

Ada had walked the Hollin Pass three times before the compass began to lie to her. The needle swung east at the cairn below Black Scar, then sulked and turned back, as though something under the turf had its own opinion about where north ought to be. Her uncle, who had surveyed the Cumbrian fells for thirty years, called it iron and told her to take a bearing from the sun instead. She did, and the sun was stubborn too, a flat white coin behind cloud.

On the fourth morning she met Tomas Reyes at the sheepfold above the tarn. He was a drover's son with a dog that would not stop circling her boots, and he had feathers tied to the crook of his stick, grey and brown, the quills bound with waxed thread. Every shepherd on the pass did it, he said, to mark the ways that were safe in fog. You followed the feathers, not the needle. His grandmother had strung beads between them, one for every family lost in the snows of 1841, and he rattled them for her as if they were dice.
She stayed with him until the cloud lifted, and then she drew the line properly, bead by bead, down the margin of her map. When she reached the bottom she took the compass off its cord and hung a feather from the ring instead. The needle wavered, settled, and pointed past the scar toward the sea, where the road really went.
