Dreamcatcher and lily design sketch
Colour · Flash
The drawing shows two stacked dreamcatchers with woven webs, beads and dangling feathers, with a lily in full bloom above the upper hoop. The linework is fine and sketched, with light hatching on the petals and feathers. It is drawn in a single blue ink on a cream background, with the design centred down the page.

Sit closer, the lamp's giving out and I'll not waste the oil on a story you've half heard already. You want the one about the Saturday dances at the Palais in Scarhill, when the floor was sprung so high you could feel the band through your boots. My grandmother's sister Win ran the cloakroom there, and she had a rule that no coat went on a hook without a ribbon tied to its collar, so nobody walked home in the wrong man's wool.

One night in the autumn of nineteen fifty-one a girl came in with no coat at all, only a thin blue dress and a bunch of white lilies wrapped in brown paper. She asked Win to hold them, said she'd be back for them after the last waltz. Win hung the paper parcel on the highest peg, above the ribbons, because there was nowhere else. The girl never came back for the flowers, and the lilies stayed fresh on that peg for three weeks, which Win said was impossible and she'd swear to it in church.
On the last night of the month, the band played the waltz they always played at the end, and a man in a grey suit came to the cloakroom counter with a ticket Win had never seen before. It was stamped with a feather. He asked for the flowers. Win gave them to him, and as he turned away the old brass web above the door, which had hung there since the Palais was a skating rink, swung twice and caught the light. My sister swears it caught a thread of silver, and I believe her, because the lilies were gone from the peg the next morning, and the ribbons hung straight as ever.
