Neo-traditional forearm tattoo of a compass rose in a round frame, framed by yellow flowers and pink banners with partly visible lettering.

Compass and flowers on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm tattoo showing a compass rose inside a round, shaded frame, surrounded by large yellow and orange flowers with green leaves. Two pink ribbon banners cross the arm, carrying partly visible lettering. The bold outlines, shading and rich colour give the piece a neo-traditional look, and the design wraps around the arm from wrist to elbow.

Dear Nell, The Bramleys came down early this year and Dad has given up pretending he can manage the long ladder, so I have been doing the top rows alone, with the wasps for company. Sorry it has taken me a month to write. Clearing the potting shed, I found the brass compass at the bottom of the cider crate, the one with the glass gone milky. I am posting it to you because I think it was always yours. You used to hold it flat on your palm and tell me where the church was, even when we were deep in the hedge and could not see a single roof.

The yellow roses by the gate have gone over, and the marigolds along the path are still bright. The barn board still carries that painted banner, I'LL ALWAYS FIND HOME, though the paint is flaking where the afternoon sun catches it. Last Sunday I stood under it and read it twice, then climbed the wall where you used to hide from the pickers and waited for someone to call our names across the field. Nobody did, so I came in and ate a cold pie.

The compass still works, mostly. The needle wanders a little after dark, so do not trust it on the stairs. I have wrapped it in the tea towel with the blue stripe, the one you always said smelled of apples, and packed it with the good wool socks because the post office frightened me.

Come home for the picking, or before the frost at the latest. You will not need the compass to find the back door. The porch light has been on every night since August, and Dad keeps asking whether the post has come. Love, Hannah.
