Black and grey realism tattoo of three roses, a compass and fine script text on the outer thigh.

Roses and compass on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows three realistic roses in varying stages of bloom, a detailed compass with a lit dial, and fine cursive script running down the thigh. The rose petals are built from smooth grey shading and strong contrast, with a small touch of red near the lowest rose. The design fills the thigh from the upper leg down, with the script placed in the gap between the upper rose and the main cluster.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the goat, she's got no manners. Aye, that's the pass you can see from here, the one with snow still in its throat in June. My grandmother's brother was the last man to carry salt over it on his back, and he kept a brass compass in his waistcoat that had belonged to a Dutch surveyor drowned in the reservoir below us. The dial was lit by a little oil lamp so you could read it in the dark, the needle swinging like a dog that wants its supper.

One October the valley fog came down thick as wet wool, and a young woman from the lowland town came up the track clutching a letter she would not let anybody read. She wanted the far side, where a man she had never met was supposed to be waiting with a house and a garden full of roses. She had her own compass, bought cheap from a stall, and she kept snapping the lid open and shut and saying the needle was lying.

The needle was not lying. The needle never lies. It was her that was turned round. My uncle walked her down the wrong fork, the one that goes to the quarry, and sat with her on a wet stone until the fog thinned. She asked him why he didn't just point her right. He said a compass tells you where north is, not where you are, and that the lost bits of a road are where a body learns its own legs.

She went home in spring. The letter, so I'm told, she burned at the quarry gate. Behind the church there's a rosebush she planted from a cutting, and it has never once bloomed the same colour twice.
