Compass and pocket watch on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose sits at the top of the design, with a pocket watch below it showing Roman numerals and exposed gears around the face. The shading is greyscale, with soft gradients on the watch casing and sharp highlights on the compass points. The tattoo covers a large area of the lower leg, with the watch and gears cropped at the bottom edge of the frame.

The clockwork in the lamp room stopped at ten past three on a Tuesday, and Mr Alder had the good sense to say nothing about it until the fog came in. I found him on the iron stair with the brass housing open across his knees, a cog the size of a biscuit tin in one hand, looking at it the way a man looks at a letter he has already read twice.

The relief boat would not come before Friday. The lamp turned by weights and gears, and someone had to wind the drum every four hours through the night or the beam would slow and then fail, and the rocks below Scarrow Point would take another schooner without anyone seeing it go. Alder handed me the key, a little bent, and showed me the compass rose scratched inside the case, its eight points worn bright where thumbs had rubbed them. 'Keep the north point true,' he said, 'and the hours will keep themselves.'
I wound it through the grey night, counting turns out loud so the dark would have something to hold. Near four the fog lifted in one long breath and I saw the Hollis trawler coming in wide of the reef, her lantern swinging, exactly where the beam was meant to show her. When the boat tied up at dawn, Alder climbed the stair with a flask and a face I had not seen on him before.
He took the watch from his waistcoat, opened it, and laid it on the glass beside the cold stove. Its hands had stopped at the same minute as the lamp. 'Then the clock was only ever counting for us,' he said, and wound it anyway.
