Compass and map on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows four side-by-side views of a forearm tattoo depicting a brass-style compass in an ornate case, with a coiled rope or chain and a faded paper map behind it. The compass, case and rope are rendered with smooth, detailed shading and soft highlights that give them depth. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey tones, and the composition wraps around the arm so the design reads from each angle.

The last lorry has its back wheels sunk in a ditch outside Stafford, and you are the one who has to walk the field at dusk and count the tent pegs. Mrs Achterberg, who has kept the show's ledger since before the war, presses the brass compass into your hand without looking up from her sums. It belonged to Solomon Vane, the ringmaster who taught the elephants to bow, and it still finds north when nothing else in the show does.

Inside the lid is a folded map of the route from the show's best year, every town ringed in pencil, the pencil faded to the colour of weak tea. The rope coiled over your shoulder is the one that held the big top's centre pole for eleven seasons, and it smells of tallow and wet canvas. Dani, the young tumbler, watches you from the step of the caravan with her arms folded. She says the compass will fetch something in Birmingham, and the map with it, and you tell her the map is not for selling.

She does not argue. She sits down beside you on the wet grass and asks where you were going to take them, now that there is no timetable and no bills to meet. You open the case. The needle trembles, settles, and points past the hedge at a county none of the posters ever reached.

In the morning there is frost on the guy ropes and the needle has not moved, so you pull the first peg, and the field lets it go with a sound like a held breath.
