Compass over an old map on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large compass with a detailed dial and needle sits over a weathered map on the forearm, with handwritten place names, coastline and a small sailing ship at the bottom. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with soft grey washes creating depth on the map and metallic highlights on the compass casing. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a red sleeve and a dark wristband, with the subject filling most of the frame.

Uncle Piero would not let me touch the brass compass until my hands stopped shaking over a pen. He kept it in his coat and tapped the glass whenever the needle wandered, as if it were a stubborn mule and not the only honest thing aboard the Santa Colomba.

Each evening he unrolled the chart across the galley table and weighted its corners with the salt cellar, a candle stub, a mooring ring and a gull's wing I had found on the quay. He traced the coast with a blunt finger. Here the land folded into the Gulf of Coron, where the water lay flat enough to name a town after a saint. Here the lettering must run along the wind, he said, so a sailor could read it sideways in a squall.

The night we lost the stars, the needle spun like a drunk dancer. Piero stood at the rail with his hand on the compass and his eyes on the little ship drawn at the bottom of the chart, the one that had never once been wrong. He pressed the coat into my arms and said I was to write the bearing, since his eyes were going.

I wrote the figures by lantern light, my letters small and careful, and when the cloud broke over a grey shore I knew from the pages, the ink was still wet on the corner of the map. Piero looked at it, then at me, and laughed until he coughed. That was the first chart I ever made true.
