Wolf, haunted house and reaper on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The sleeve shows a large wolf head with glowing yellow eyes at the top, a moonlit multi-storey house in the centre and a hooded reaper holding a scythe near the base. Bearded faces and twisted branches frame the design. The shading is smooth and painterly with strong contrast, mostly in black and grey, with yellow tones in the eyes, lamplight and sky. Three angled views show the same sleeve from front, side and back.

The snow had buried the lane by four, and by six the only light left in the valley was the lamp over the Crowsfoot's door, swinging on its chain. You had counted the guests twice already: two drovers asleep by the fire, a widow who had paid in advance and not spoken since, and yourself, the new girl up from the lowlands to take the night shift. Mrs Vane had said the house was quiet in winter. She had not said anything about the bell.

It rang at midnight, though the rope hung slack in the hall. You went up the stairs with the lantern and found the back bedroom door open onto nothing but moonlight on snow. Beyond the sill, a big grey wolf stood in the drift with its breath smoking, its yellow eyes level with the glass, and below it, at the gate, a hooded figure leant on a long scythe and waited with the patience of someone who had never once been refused.
"Not tonight," you said, because nobody had taught you what else to say.
The wolf turned its head toward the figure, then back toward you, and something in its look reminded you of the old landlord's portrait in the stairwell, the one with the beard nobody had ever trimmed. Mrs Vane had kept that portrait turned to the wall for thirty years. You went down, took the iron key from its hook, and found the ledger beside it. The last line read: Gate left open, third night of snow. Someone had been paid to keep the door shut, and the wages were due.
You lifted the bar and stepped into the cold, and the reaper bowed its hood toward you as if you were the one it had come to see.
