Compass and sailing ships on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A forearm tattoo shows a detailed compass rose set in an ornate case, surrounded by smoky clouds at the top. Below, a folded parchment map carries small sailing ships and a red wax seal on the left edge. The shading is soft and realistic in black and grey, with the compass centre and wax seal picked out in warmer tones against a plain background that includes tattoo machines.

The wax had gone hard before Ada Penrose could get the seal to take, so she pressed her thumb into it instead, and the red smudge stayed on the chart like a thumbprint of blood. Outside the harbour office the wind was backing round to the north-east, which meant the Mercy would not clear the bar until the afternoon tide, and Captain Hale would want the parcel in his hand before he had finished his tea.

The chart was her father's last work. He had drawn the coast from Flamborough to the Tees in brown ink, every sounding in fathoms, and along the lower edge he had sketched three small ships running before a breeze toward a rocky spit that appeared on no other chart in the drawer. She had asked him once what lay past the spit. He had tapped the brass compass on his desk, its needle trembling against the glass, and said that the needle knew more than he did.

She opened the compass case that morning. The needle swung, shivered, and settled, pointing not north but straight at the spit. She sat with that for a long minute while the kettle ticked on the stove. Then she folded the chart along its old creases, tucked it into oilcloth, and wrote on the outside in her neatest hand: Not for the bar. For the spit.

When Hale came up the steps with his cap in his fist, she gave him the parcel and said nothing about the needle. He read the words twice, laughed once through his nose, and went down to the boat with the grey light on the water and the wax seal sitting warm in his palm.
