Compass, clouds and map on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A compass with a detailed dial and pointer sits at the centre of the design, framed by soft shaded clouds. Below, a folded map or parchment carries small sailing ship silhouettes and a red wax seal on its edge. The shading is smooth and tonal in greys and black, with the red seal as the only strong colour accent, and the design wraps along the forearm.

'Don't you touch that chart, Albie, not with your sticky fingers. Sit by the range where I can see you, and I'll tell you why Mrs Pengelly never let anyone open the drawer beneath the hall clock at Gull Cottage. It was the winter the fog came in off Mousehole and sat on the roofs for nine days, so the lodgers played cards by lamplight and the sea sounded like somebody breathing through a wet sheet.

Her husband, Tom Pengelly, had sailed the Marigold Rose to Valparaiso and back eleven times, and each homecoming he brought her a present in brown paper. The last letter came by post instead, folded and sealed with red wax pressed like a little coin of blood. Inside was a chart of a harbour nobody on the coast could name, a sailing ship drawn at its mouth and a dotted line curling out to the edge of the paper. Underneath, in pencil, he had written: keep the needle true, my love, and I'll find the way back.
She set his compass on the windowsill, brass face gone soft as an old penny. Each morning she wound his pocket watch, the one that had stopped the night the barque was lost off the Lizard, and each morning the needle swung and swung and never settled north at all. It pointed at the back door, steady as a hand on a sleeve.
Then on the ninth morning the latch lifted without a knock, and a thin boy stood on the step holding a salt-stained envelope with the same red seal, and he said, 'Mrs Pengelly, the Marigold's lamps are in the bay.' She did not turn from the kettle. She only said, 'Then you'd better come in out of the wet, and mind the drawer on your way past.'
