Compass and tree on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey compass rose sits inside an ornate oval frame, with a leafy tree spreading over the shoulder and roots and grass tufts at the base. The linework is fine and detailed, with light shading on the leaves, bark and roots. The two side-by-side photographs show the same tattoo from slightly different angles against plain skin.

The needle would not settle, so I stopped asking it to. Sleet had come over Cold Ash Pass before noon, and Mr Teague's brass theodolite sat in its box on the mule while I crouched against a wet boulder, hat tipped into the wind, waiting for the cloud to break over the valley.

Everyone in Hollin Dale called it the Witness Tree. It stood alone where the packhorse road bent, its roots gripping the scree like fingers on a banister, and a century of carters had cut their initials into its bark. The boundary between the Ashworth and Crake estates had been argued over for forty years, and the deed was plain enough: measure from the trunk. The deed did not say the trunk would lean a little further every winter, or that its roots would creep under the wall that was supposed to mark it.

The sun came through at half past two, low and gold, and threw the oak's shadow across the grass. I laid the compass flat on my knee and watched the needle shiver, then swing, then hold, pointing straight along that shadow toward the north ridge. It was the first honest bearing I had taken all week.

I drove a peg into the turf on the far side of the roots, where the grass tufts grew thickest, and wrote in my book that the line ran from the tree as it stood that afternoon. Teague would argue. Let him climb up and find the old initials for himself. I left the wind to do what it liked with the rest.
