Mandala and dotwork geometric on shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A large mandala-style flower sits on the front of the shoulder, built from cream, pale green and yellow petals with bold black outlines and dotted accents. A dotwork geometric pattern of overlapping interlocking circles and lines in black and grey spreads from the flower across the top of the shoulder and upper arm. The colour work is concentrated on the left, with the dotwork fading into the skin to the right, and a blurred background of people sits behind.

Dear Ruth,

The dahlia you gave me last spring has finally opened, and I have been stood in the glasshouse doorway for twenty minutes deciding whether to tell you or just let it be. It is the cream and green one, the one Dad called Sunday Best because it never looked untidy in its life. Its petals lie in rings, each one tipped with a black thread of shadow, and the centre is a little crown of yellow buttons that the bees have been queueing for since eight.
I haven't told you what happened to the seedling tray, have I? Every pot I sowed in March came up in a neat spiral, one seed set a finger's width from the next, the way Dad spaced his leeks. He always said the garden kept its own arithmetic and I laughed at him. Then I sat on the upturned bucket, counted the rings on the cold frame glass, and found the same numbers he'd scratched into the potting shed door in 1987. I stopped laughing after that.
Come up at the weekend. Bring the good secateurs and your grumpy face. I'll cut you the first bloom and we can press a petal between the pages of his atlas, the one with the Lincolnshire coast all folded soft. Then you can tell me whether it's me going soft or the garden.
Love, Maggie
