Mandala and compass star on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular mandala built from layered petal shapes surrounds a large eight-point compass star at the centre. The linework is crisp and outlined, with the petals and background filled in dense stippled dots that create soft shading. The design is in black and grey ink on pale skin, shown against a plain white background.

The needle in the brass box would not settle past the Sound of Carrick, and the master blamed the iron in the hold. Dilys, who had come aboard in a flour sack and was paid in ship's biscuit, thought it was the drawing. Her grandmother had scratched one into the hearth ash each winter, a ring of petals folded inward like a lotus closing for the night, with a star at its centre to keep wandering dead from the door.

So on the fourth night she crept to the binnacle with a stub of charcoal and a cup of seawater. She traced the petals layer by layer around the card, pressing dots into the spaces between them with her thumb until the grey pricked the wood like frost. The sailors laughed. The bosun said a girl who drew on a compass deserved a keelhauling, then stood his watch with a hand over his eyes and said nothing when the needle finally swung north and held.
At the next landfall, a fishing village of stone huts with no proper harbour, an old woman looked at the card in exchange for a loaf. She turned it over, studied the eight points, and asked who had drawn the outer ring. When Dilys said she had, the woman nodded slowly. 'Then you know the star is only the middle,' she said. 'The petals are the way home.'
The ship sailed on with its compass true, and Dilys kept the charcoal in her apron pocket. Some nights she still traced the ring on the back of her hand, petal after petal, until the sea was quiet enough to sleep.
