Compass rose on an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black compass rose sits on the inner wrist and forearm, with an N marking the top point and an S at the base. Thin, precise linework builds up the central star, with fine radiating rays and a leafy, feathered flourish along the lower point. The photo is taken from above in soft, neutral light, with the hand raised and the grey pavement filling the background.

The night porter at St Judith's had walked the same corridors for thirty years and never once carried a map. His grandmother had put a compass rose on his wrist the summer he left the herring boats, a black star with the letters at each point, and he read the building by it. North was the lift lobby, where the lights hummed. South was the mortuary passage, always cold. East was the maternity wing, and west was the chapel, where nobody went unless they meant to.

One February, past three, a boy in pyjamas came shuffling out of ward nine dragging a drip stand that squeaked on every tile. He was lost, he said, and his mum had gone off somewhere, and every door looked the same. The porter crouched so they were level and asked him what he could see from his bed. The boy said a blind with a crack in it. Then the crack is your north, the porter said, and you keep it on your left hand while the stand does the talking.
They went together, the squeak leading the way, the porter turning his wrist now and then to check the star. On ward nine the boy's mum was in the corridor, frantic, and she held him so hard the drip stand toppled and nobody minded. The porter stood back while she thanked him, and noticed the boy had kept hold of his sleeve the whole way, pointing at the ink.
When his shift ended at six, the sky over the car park had turned the colour of pewter. He held his wrist up to the light coming from the east, where the wards were waking, and the feathered leaf on the lower point seemed to lean toward the door. He went home the long way, out past the chapel, the one direction he had never trusted.
