Geometric circle tattoo on a wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a circular geometric design, built from overlapping petal shapes inside a ring, sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The lines are crisp and even, with light shading inside the petals. The background is out-of-focus dried grass, with a dark knitted sleeve and stacked bangles around the wrist.

Your uncle never let you touch the oven before he had shown you the scoring. "The cut opens the way a petal does," he said, "one clean stroke, or the crumb tears and the loaf goes to the ducks." You were nine and thought he was being poetic. At ten to four now, with the back door propped on a sack of semolina and the street still black, you understand he was simply being exact.

Proving baskets sit in a ring on the long bench, six of them, each rounded and dusted with rice flour. Every half hour you turn them a quarter turn so none stays in the draught from the yard. It is a small job and it takes the whole night to learn. The dough does not care what time the bus runs or who has rung in sick. It only cares that the room stays warm and nobody rushes it.
The pencilled sheet taped inside the flour bin lid is his too, a neat drawing of overlapping circles that he called the timetable. Each petal, he wrote, is an hour, and the centre is the moment you must be ready. You laughed at that when you found it after the funeral, when the shop still smelled of him and nobody had the heart to sell it.
At ten past five the first batch comes out. You score the last loaf, eight strokes fanning from the middle, your wrist loose and sure, and the blade sings through the surface. The crust splits open exactly as he promised. You set it on the rack beside the others, still ticking as it cools, and for once you do not look at the clock.
