Compass rose on the inner wrist
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose with an eight-point star at the centre sits on the inner wrist, with fleur-de-lis tips at the four cardinal points. The design is built from solid black fills and bold outlines, with a ring of dot detailing around the circle. It is shown in black ink on pale skin against a softly blurred, multicoloured background.

The brass compass in the ticket hall at Hollin Cross had lost its needle the winter the new line opened, so Mrs Adair sent the boy up the ladder to see what could be done. He came down with dust in his collar and said the needle was still there, only it had turned to face the platform instead of the north.

Nobody believed him until the six o'clock from Penrith came in an hour late, with a woman in a grey coat who had not bought a ticket and did not seem to know where she was going. She asked the porter which way was home. He told her the compass would say, and she laughed, but she laid her palm flat on the glass, and the needle swung round to the fleur-de-lis at the south point, where the old ironwork flowers stood in the floor tiles.
Her home, it turned out, was on the far side of that very line, a cottage with a blue door her father had painted before the war. She had left as a girl and never come back. Mrs Adair remembered her now, the child who used to count the dots round the ring of the dial while the signal bell rang.
The woman took the next train south and did not ask for a receipt. The porter wound the clock that night and found the needle sitting steady on the north, where it has pointed ever since, and the eight points of the star keep their own counsel.
