Compass rose over a torn map sketch

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of an eight-point compass rose with N and E letters, set in the centre of a torn and creased map. The islands, coastlines and fold lines are outlined with shading in greys, giving the piece depth. The composition fills the page with the compass at the centre and the map torn outward toward the edges.

The surveyor's daughter kept the old chart rolled in a biscuit tin, and she would only unroll it on the kitchen table after the lamp was lit. Her father had drawn the coast of the Sound from memory, the year the mill fire took his eyesight, and he had never trusted the ordnance sheets after that. "Don't correct the islands," he told her, the last winter he could still hold a pencil. "They move. Half of them are sandbanks that only come up at low water, and the other half are men's lies about what they saw." He tore the sheet at the eastern edge to show her where the ferry channel had silted, and the tear ran on past the margin into the paper he had not yet drawn on, as if the coast was reaching for somewhere else.

She took the chart to the harbour master in March, when the herring boats were coming back short. He laid it under a glass weight and squinted at the north arrow for a long time. Then he said the sandbanks were exactly where the old man had put them, and that nobody had believed him either.

She left the chart with the harbour master. The tin she kept, and every night after that she set the lamp in its window and turned the N to face the water.
