Owl, castle and triangle symbol design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a tattoo design showing an owl with spread wings in front of a castle with several towers, set within a round frame. The owl, castle and frame are shaded with soft greys and fine stippled dots, with bold outlines around the ornamental scrolls. A triangle with a circle and a vertical line sits at the lower right, and a small envelope appears at the upper left on a plain paper background.

The owl came down the chimney of the Westmarch mill on the morning of the wedding, and the miller's wife said that was no way for a bird to arrive at a family matter. It had a letter in its beak, sealed with green wax, and the address was written in a hand nobody in the valley could read. Ada took it from the owl's foot before her father could reach for the poker.

Inside was a single card, and a sketch of the castle on the hill above Scarrow Water, its seven towers drawn in pencil with a fine dust of dots about them like frost. Under the castle someone had written that the bride would be welcome in the great hall, and that the groom had already been told, and that the owl would wait for her answer. Her father said the castle had been empty since the old lord drowned his horses in the lake. Ada said the groom had gone up the hill three winters ago and not come down, and she had not minded, because he had written every month.
They walked up at dusk with the owl ahead of them, lifting and settling on the stone posts of the gate. In the hall the candles were already lit, though no one had lit them. At the far end stood a man in a grey coat, and when he turned she saw that he carried a small triangle of iron, a ring set inside it, and a bar running down the middle, the sort of thing a child draws in the dust and calls a door.
He held it out to her and said that the owl had kept its promise, and so would he. Ada took the triangle, and it was warm as bread, and the owl folded its wings on the rafter above them and did not come down again.
