The clockwork in the lamp room has stopped again, and you know it before you reach the top of the stairs, because the beam is sweeping in short, sulky jerks across the water. The weights hang slack in their tube. Someone has to wind them by hand every four hours, and tonight that someone is you, with the lamp still warm and the wind flinging grit against the glass.

The mechanism is older than the lighthouse's paint. Brass wheels the size of dinner plates, each tooth worn smooth where generations of keepers' thumbs have gone looking for a slip. The lens sits above them on its bed of mercury, and the chart on the wall says it turns once every thirty seconds so that ships out past the Shingles can tell this light from the others on the coast. You pull the ratchet, feel the weight climb, and listen for the tick that means the escapement has caught.

It catches. The beam swings out over the black water and back, steady again, and somewhere below a trawler's engine note changes as its skipper, who has never once thanked you, adjusts his course. You sit on the cold step with the oil can in your lap and count the teeth of the largest wheel, the way your father taught you, until the number stops mattering and only the rhythm does.

At dawn you write the time in the log as you always do. Beneath it, because nobody reads the margins, you draw a small rose with a gear for its heart. Then you go down to make the tea, and the light goes on turning without you.
