Compass rose tattoo on the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed black compass rose sits centrally on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck. The fine linework forms an outer ring, a star of pointed rays and an inner circular pattern, with the cardinal points labelled N, E, S and W. The image is in black ink only, shown against warm skin, with a fine chain necklace and a white knitted top at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The chart had been folded so many times that the north-east corner had worn through, and Marta pinned it flat with her thumb while the chandler's boy counted out the brass dividers. Outside the harbour office the rain came sideways off the estuary, the kind that found its way into ink and made it bleed. She had been told the rose on the old surveyor's map was the only true thing on the sheet, that every line of longitude had been drawn from it and not the other way round.

She bought the dividers, two pencils and a bottle of Indian ink from a stall run by a widow who would not take coin until Marta had shown her the ring of her own wedding band. Then she walked the long way along the quay, past the fish market where the gulls were quarrelling over scales, and past the chapel where a bell rang for nobody. At the end of the pier she unfolded the chart again and found the star. Its points ran out in eight directions, each one sharp enough to cut a finger, and each one labelled in a hand that had clearly been steadier than her own.
She sat on the cold stone and began copying it onto the back of her hand, because paper was for the living and skin was where a person kept the things she meant to keep. By the time the rain stopped the N was pointing at the church, the E at the sea, and the W at the wall where her mother had once painted the house a colour nobody could name. Marta closed the chart, put it in her coat, and set off south without checking which way she was facing.
