Compass rose on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small compass rose sits on the inner wrist, with a central circle, radiating points and the letters N, E, S and W at the cardinal positions. The linework is dark and even, with fine detail in the inner rings and points. The ink is a single dark tone against pale skin, and the photograph is framed closely on the hand with a knitted cream background.

Before the shutters lift you already know the time by the smell of the proving room, and the oven ticks as it climbs. Flour hangs in the back like weather. Ruth from the corner shop will be rattling the grille at quarter past, wanting her cob and her news, and the rye is still a sticky mess under your palms.

Your grandfather kept a brass compass on the hook above the scales. He never carried it anywhere. He said a baker only needed to know three things: where the wind came from, where the oven ran hot, and where the sun would be when the bread was done. The needle has been stuck against the wall for years, but you still touch its cool case before you start. Tonight the wind is coming in from the east, pushing rain against the back window, and the bins at the end of the lane rattle like a bad hymn.
The rye goes in at ten to four. You score a cross across the top the way he taught you, then stand back with the peel and count to sixty while steam rolls over the sill. Past the chimney pots a van grinds its gears, and you think of the sacks that should have come at three. Nobody is coming to tell you which way to turn. North is the wall, south is the door, and every road you know runs past this oven.
At half past five the loaves come out dark and blistered. You set them on the sill in a row, facing the glass, while the grey light finds the corners of the street one by one. By the time Ruth knocks, you have already decided you were never lost at all.
