Compass rose tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large compass rose sits at the centre, with a solid black eight-point star and a fine dotted circle around it. Small red splashes, scattered dots and tiny outlined shapes add detail, and a ring of small lettering runs around the outer edge. Black ink dominates with restrained red accents, photographed against soft skin tones.

The surveyor's chain was still coiled on the cutting table when the messenger arrived, and I knew from his muddy boots that the news was bad. Kestrava had no coast on any map the Admiralty trusted, which was why my father had drawn it himself, by lamplight, the winter before he died.

The rose on his parchment was the old kind, eight points of black ink with a red ring where north was meant to sit. Every navigator in the kingdom learned to draw it before they learned their letters. Around its rim he had lettered the guild verse, the words worn so thin I read them with my thumb: the sea keeps what the star forgets. He had dotted the outer circle with islands nobody had visited, and where the ink ran pale he had let a red splash bleed out, as if the paper had cut itself.
The messenger wanted the chart. Drennor claimed the eastern shoals and needed proof they were theirs. I unrolled the sheet across the table and showed him the dotted ring, the specks that were not stars but reefs my father had counted with a plumb line and a dying man's patience. I put my finger on the red splash at the south-east edge.
Here, I said. The sea keeps what it is given. He looked at me the way men look at a compass that points somewhere inconvenient, then rolled the chart tight and tucked it under his arm. I kept the original star. It lives in the drawer beneath the sextant, and I take it out whenever the wind turns foul.
