Compass rose with anchor and botanical wreath

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A compass rose with a pale teal globe-like background sits at the centre of a looping wreath of twisting branches, leaves and pink flowers. A bird perches at the top right, and a rope and anchor hang from the lower left. The linework is fine and detailed with soft watercolour-style washes of teal, peach and pink on a cream background.

Morwen had been told the compass on the harbour wall was broken since her grandfather's day, so when its needle swung north and stayed there, she assumed the brass had finally given up. Hallan had nine houses, one pier and a shop that sold tinned peaches to the same four people every Thursday. Nothing on the island moved without someone noticing.

She took the old rope down from the store shed, the one her father had coiled and never used again, and scrubbed the salt from the anchor shank with a wire brush until the iron showed grey under the rust. The gulls watched her work. A kite had nested in the wreck of the chapel roof all spring, and it dropped a feather at her feet as if settling a debt.

Her father's last letter had come folded inside a seed packet. It said only that the mainland boats were running again and that he would walk up from the slip when the tide allowed. The tide had allowed four times since, and she had stopped counting the days aloud after the second.

On the fifth morning the grey bird with the cream breast came back to the wall, the one that had followed the ferry for years, and a scrap of paper was pinned under its foot. The handwriting was not her father's. Look north, it said, the needle has never once pointed anywhere else. She looked north. Across the water a figure was already crossing the causeway with a rope over one shoulder, the tide falling away behind him.
