Compass rose with feathers on the back of a hand
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A black ink compass rose sits at the centre of the back of a hand, with compass point letters including N, E, S, W and intercardinal labels spreading outward. Two black feather outlines and a few ink dots sit near the thumb and wrist, with loose sketchy linework. Soft pink, red and green watercolour washes fill the background behind the compass, while the surrounding area is plain skin against a grey, blurred road surface.

Dear Wren,

You will laugh when you see what Mr Pagett has done to the parish map. He painted the compass rose on the hall wall over the door, so every child who leaves for the fields walks out beneath an N pointing at the bell tower. I told him the needle should point at the lake. He said the lake moves and the steeple does not, which is what a man says after forty years of being wrong and finding one sentence he likes.
I have been colouring the washes for him. Ink first, then the rose madder you gave me and a green from the mill-pond bottle, sponged out to the edges the way you taught me so it bleeds like a bruise going down. The feathers are from the jay Ellis left on the bench. Pagett has a steady hand with a quill and a worse one with a brush, so I did the lettering myself: NE, SE, SW, NW, the small ones crowded in like they are trying to get a seat.
Last night the hall was empty after choir. I stood under the rose with a lamp and saw that the south point lands exactly on the gap in the hedge where the old drovers' path runs out. Pagett swears it was an accident. Nobody draws a line that straight by accident. I think he was telling the village which way home is, in case anyone forgets when the lane floods in winter.
I will finish the washes on Friday. Tell Mother I am eating. Come up before the hay is in if you can, and bring the good dividers. I want to measure the distance from the rose to that gap myself before he decides it was all a mistake.
Yours in ink, Nell
