Space motifs on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A scattering of small black tattoos across the inner forearm shows a UFO, ringed and plain planets, stars, a crescent moon and a rocket-like shape. The linework is thin and even, with small dots and dashes used for stars, and the designs are unshaded. The photograph is taken against a plain pale wall, with the hand raised and a silver bracelet at the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on the ninth floor of Halden House believed the old man until the night the saucer came down by the bins. Mr Pryce had said for years that the moon came to the car park each month to drink from the puddles, and that a crescent was only the moon bending down to reach them. The children laughed. Nell did not laugh, because she had seen the puddles glow, so at the dark of the moon she took her torch and went down the eleven flights, past the broken lift, to see for herself.

The thing by the bins was no bigger than a bath, and it tipped on one thin leg like a wading bird. A small voice from its hatch asked whether she could tell it how many planets there were, because its map had blown off the roof and it had lost count. Nell counted on her fingers. Four small ones, a big one with a ring round its middle like a hoop on a stick, and one more that was only a black ball, which the pilot said was the sort that did not want to be looked at. The pilot seemed pleased with her answer and offered her a ride home.

They went up the stairwell a few feet off the ground, lit by the stars the pilot pressed onto the walls as they passed. At the ninth floor the old man was standing in his doorway in his dressing gown, and he did not look surprised at all. He only said, "Took your time," and went back inside.

When Nell woke the next morning there was a star stuck to her windowpane, cold and faintly silver. Each new moon after that there was another, and the car park puddles stayed dry. The old man said the moon had stopped coming down because it had found what it wanted up here.
