Lace-pattern floral band on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A band of black ink wraps around the forearm, imitating lace with a hexagonal mesh and a dotted edge. Simple flower heads and thin curling stems sit within the lace pattern. The tattoo is entirely black ink on pale skin against a deep red backdrop.

Every Thursday the lift at Hollin Court stopped on the eleventh floor for Mrs Adair's mending, and every Thursday she handed the boy a roll of black net and told him to bring back whatever the wind had taken. The net had come from her mother, who had made bobbin lace in a terraced house in Nottingham before the mills closed and the flats went up. Every window on the estate had a net hung in it, cut to fit and grey with weather, but hers was black and had never faded.

The boy, Dennis, was nine and asked too many questions. Why were the holes hexagons? Why did the flowers have only five petals when the daisies on the grass had more? Mrs Adair said the holes were the shape that holds the most with the least, and that the flowers were the ones her mother could draw without looking. She set a row of dots along each hem so the net would know where to stop.
One February the wind took the whole west face of the block. Dennis came up with a torn square under his arm and nothing to put on it. Mrs Adair looked at the gap a long time. Then she took a pen from the drawer, drew a stem curling down from the nearest good flower, and sketched a new bloom across the rip, following the mesh with her pen until the hole was closed and the net held. She told him to hang it back in the window before the light went.
That evening the lift hummed, and the estate went on being grey below. From the eleventh floor you could see the square of black lace on the west face, and one daisy in it that had five petals and a stem that ran off the edge, as if it had only paused there on its way somewhere else.
