Compass rose with fleur-de-lis on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large compass rose with an eight-point star in teal, black and mustard sits at the centre, topped by a fleur-de-lis. Behind it, a grey mandala of fine linework and stippled dots fills the background. Bold black outlines define the star and the mandala, and the composition is centred on the upper arm.

The compass-maker in Holm had two daughters and one good needle, and when the elder was to be married across the water, he gave the needle to the younger to carry. Everyone knew the road to Saltergate ran through the fen, where the reeds closed behind a walker and the mist rose off the ditches like breath.

The younger girl, Ailsa, set out at first light with the brass case under her arm. Its face was ringed with engraved scrolls like frost on a window, and its eight points were painted teal and black and mustard, the colours her mother boiled from fen flowers. At the first crossing the needle swung and would not settle. She sat on a plank and waited, because her grandmother had told her that a compass only lies to people who are hurrying.
When the mist thinned she saw a heron standing in the shallows, and beyond it a stone cross with a lily carved on its arm. She followed the bird's long line of flight, and the needle steadied, pointing as true as a plumb line. By noon she reached the church, wet to the knee, with the case dry under her shawl.
At the wedding her sister looked at the muddy hem and laughed, then took the compass and turned it over. On the back, in letters so small they had to be read with the lamp close, was the name of their grandmother, who had walked the same fen the morning she married. Nobody in Saltergate had known the road was marked that way. Ailsa kept the compass after that, and the road with it.
