Compass rose with ringed lettering on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular compass rose is tattooed on the forearm, with arrow points, tick marks and small outlined triangles radiating from the centre. A map outline sits at the middle, and lettering set around the outer ring reads as a quote. The fine, even linework is in black ink only and is shown against a plain, slightly soft black and white photograph with framed flash on the wall behind.

Brother Anselm had drawn the same coastline forty times before the abbot noticed the ink was running thin. The map hung in the scriptorium above the bench where the novices sharpened their quills, showing a long country folded against the sea, with the abbey marked as a small square at its eastern edge. Every bell, the boys were sent to fetch the compass rose from the chest and turn it to the north, because the abbey roof was the only place the sun reached in a straight line.

Then there was Brother Piers, who walked off the edge of the map one winter with a satchel of bread and a pen. The novices said he had gone to find the end of the sea. The abbot said nothing, but each morning he set the rose on the sill and traced the outer ring with one finger, reading the words cut there by a mason who had never left the valley: not all who wander are lost.
In spring a letter came from a fishing village three counties south. Piers had drawn that coast so truthfully that the harbourmaster used his sheet to bring a ship past the rocks in fog. He had sent back a copy of the abbey's map, and in the margin he had written that he had not got lost, only gone the long way round to be certain.
The abbot pinned the copy beside the rose. The novices still turn the compass north before they pray, and nobody asks them why the arrows point so eagerly at the sea.
