Dear Tom, the lamp came back on at dusk, same as every night since the storm took the fog bell, and I stood at the gallery rail thinking of you hauling that brass compass out of your sea chest the week before you sailed. You said the French words on its face were the only lesson from Mother's school you ever kept. Une vie extraordinaire. I told you it was a daft thing to carve on something that only tells you where north is, and you laughed and said north was the whole point.

The rock is quiet now except for the gulls and the generator grumbling under the stairs. The inspector came on Tuesday with his ledger and his cold tea and asked whether I meant to stay past the autumn. I said I hadn't decided. He wrote something down and didn't ask again.
Last night I found your compass in the drawer under the logbooks. You must have left it here by mistake, or on purpose. The needle swings loose now, but when I laid it flat on the sill, the north arrow settled and pointed straight at the lamp room door, as if it had been waiting for someone to come back up the stairs.
I am writing with the window open so you can hear the sea. Come home when the ships allow it. The light will keep.
